Sunnie's Fro Sun Yogurt

Who can resist a cold fro yo treat after a long, hot summer day? Not I.  On one particular hot summer evening, we thought to try "Sunnies."

Sunnie's Fro Sun Yogurt is located at 2225 W.Wellesley in Spokane, east side of the shopping center where Walmart is.   It is much like the other local, popular, self-serve yogurt shops in town.  They offer samples of
their yogurt, post various fro yo eating ideas,
offer a wide variety of toppings and customers pay by the ounce for their tasty treat, but there were a few things I found to be a bit original.

The first difference, was the flavor.  I noticed a difference immediately. All the yogurt flavors had the same distinct flavor experience, so I figured it was part of the brand's uniqueness. Another difference was  that there were some interesting toppings that I have not noticed at other places... like freshly sliced bananas and bacon bits. .(Would you have thought of bacon bits as a dessert topping?  That is an original to me!) This place even  boasts that they try to accommodate various dietary needs by serving Non fat. Lactose free, gluten and dairy free options, even sorbet.  No kidding, these people ever serve fro-yo that is" kosher!"

They had this flavor too... Candy Bar Smash.

I tasted almost all the flavors and finally settled in on three.... strawberry vanilla and chocolate with hot fudge, peanut sauce and slivered almonds on top.  Mine is the one on the right.

Yum!

With all the choices of cold yogurt-y dessert bases, toppings and the fun summery atmosphere, it's evident that Sunnie's strives to make customers feel welcomed and appreciated.  There is even music on the patio!

Morning Sun Bakery

Need a little sunshine?

The Morning Sun, located at 5602 N. Wall St. is a pleasant spot for sure.  I just love this little north side neighborhood it is in, mainly because I think it rather "Rockwell" that the neighborhood itself is like a miniature city with little businesses in it.  On Wall St. one can find many nice little shops.

Street view from the window...

I have seen or visited personally, a couple of restaurants, including pizza, a book store, hair and nail salons, a pet parlor, an optical care shop, a Scottish Highland dance studio, chiropractor offices and most certainly, coffee stops. and that is just south of Francis Avenue!

I like a good latte and pastry once in a while, or a place to meet up with friends... and on my long list of great places to go... this is definitively one!  It's warm and roomy inside, homey even.  I like that.

The people who work here are welcoming and friendly, the music is pleasant, and the signs make me laugh!

The coffee is made to order and the pastries... which along with the coffee might be your reason for coming here... are divine! There are some neat creations!

They are pretty big too, like this cookie, but big is always great and fun to share between friends!

White Box Pies Bakery and Cafe

I was happy to try this little spot called White Box Pies on the corner of Sharp and Ruby.  I am really not a sandwich" person... and I'm not much of a pie person either, but being en-hungered for lunch, I took a venture to see what White box Pies was all about.  i was a bit curious too, to find out more about what "gluten free" items a pie and sandwich shop had to offer.

They had quite a selection.

 The pies looked yummy.

This is my gluten-free lunch plate.

While I was ordering, having noticed and commented how busy this little spot was, the man behind the counter told me they were looking for another location and would be moving soon to a bigger space.  He also told me that hey make all of their own everything here from scratch.  I think most of the building is kitchen.  With both indoor and outdoor seating, the place was definitely on people's radar scope for lunch.  I even overheard the man behind the counter telling one other first-timer to this restaurant that the sandwiches here would be the best they had ever eaten.

I ordered the Salad Trio... There was a Chicken and Pasta Salad, a Broccoli and Bacon and a Tomato/Cucumber Vinaigrette. (All gluten-free,) The three salads we served with a bread.  I selected a gluten free roll.   I didn't ask them about cross contamination because I am not gluten intolerant.  I just wanted to  check out what eating gluten-free might be like. So if that is you, you will have to ask your own questions of the management if that is of interest to you.

Lunch was great!  The gluten free roll, for one who does not HAVE TO eat gluten-free and had never eaten a gluten free roll before, was actually good.  I mean, it would take some getting used to if I was to actually be excited about it.  It was a good substitute, but certainly not the same as a more usual wheat product.  My salads, all three of them, were tasty!  My favorite was the broccoli one.  Yum!'

I wonder what location White Box Pies will be at when they move.  I may have to go back and try a sandwich, or maybe take home one of them-thar pies.

Blu Berry

Popular in Spokane right now is going out on the town for a dessert treat of frozen yogurt, at least it must be.  There are frozen yogurt shops popping up everywhere.  The most recent I have personally seen is Blu Berry Frozen Yogurt.  This one is located on Division and Francis in the Northtown Square Shopping Center, and is easy to find because of the Red Lobster restaurant on the corner.

Blue Berry is an attractive spot, decorated in a lovely hue of mostly blue... but raspberry too.  It's surprisingly very much like the other frozen yogurt places around town that we like to visit, and yet it is different.  I would have thought they were all owned by the same entity because of the similarities, (I am getting used to the look of small squares of tile, ) but they are not.  I asked.  One nice feature here at the Blu Berry is a lovely fireplace to warm yourself when you come in from the cold... to eat your cold Yo Cream treat!
They have a wall of frozen yogurt spouts from which to try their flavors and serve yourself you favorite flavors.

In order to really enjoy places like this, one must overcome fears of sticky fingers.....

We have some fears of sticky fingers...so we appreciate attentive attendants and watchful parents who read and acknowledge signs like this one here.  We also love frozen yogurt and love the freedom to try all the new flavors too, so we kinda love all the FROYO options we see around town.

They had a lot of toppings to choose from but I am a bit of a "purist, " no toppings for me on my selection of  chocolate, peanut butter and coffee flavored Yo Cream.  Geo makes up for a lack of toppings on mine by putting a lot of toppings on his.

I have to say too, that he was a little disappointed.  With all the toppings they did offer, they didn't have almonds. Specifically, he likes it when places offer the  chocolate covered almonds, but here he found no almonds at all.

there were lots of other things though, and he did find some things he likes.

He seemed to enjoy his Fro Yo.

 We both did.

Rockwood Bakery

Near Manito Park on Spokane's south hill,
off of Grand,
on 18th Ave....

you will find this tucked away little bakery...

But besides being a bakery, it's a welcoming little neighborhood cafe, serving salads, soups and quiches, as well as a numerous amount of delicious pastries, turnovers, chocolate croissants, and scones.... not to mention, espresso, coffee and tea!

We went for tea!

....but we ended up with more than tea,; we also had a mint chocolate chip cookie.and and a slice of quiche.

I enjoyed the delicious quiche pictured here, while my friend ate her green colored cookie with delight.

The quiche was "beautimous." (That is my new word, meaning, "beautifully delicious!")

The Rockwood Bakery is housed in a one hundred year old building that served as the local grocery store for many years.  It is a pretty large facility with several rooms of seating and an outdoor patio for warmer-weather friends.  One could simply jaunt over from the park on a sunny day, have a bite to eat and be on their way. Of course you could always stop here first and take a treat with you on a picnic at the park!

Inside or out, there is a friendly neighborhood atmosphere where friends can gather, or one can  buy a daily newspaper and  sip a coffee by themselves.  I loved the high ceilings, eclectic decor and just imagining that people have come in and out of these doors and traveled up and down the sidewalk before this little place for years and years!

I thought found the selction of toys for visiting kids to be hilarious!

Here is one of my favorites:

I think he is a politician....

And the magnetic words seemed to be a fun thing that people liked to play with while visiting here too.

IT was fun to visit and quite a treat, but sooner or later, it is time to go....

and good friends have to
part ways for a little while,

.... but only until we meet again.
