White Box Pies Bakery and Cafe

I was happy to try this little spot called White Box Pies on the corner of Sharp and Ruby.  I am really not a sandwich" person... and I'm not much of a pie person either, but being en-hungered for lunch, I took a venture to see what White box Pies was all about.  i was a bit curious too, to find out more about what "gluten free" items a pie and sandwich shop had to offer.

While I was ordering, having noticed and commented how busy this little spot was, the man behind the counter told me they were looking for another location and would be moving soon to a bigger space.  He also told me that hey make all of their own everything here from scratch.  I think most of the building is kitchen.  With both indoor and outdoor seating, the place was definitely on people's radar scope for lunch.  I even overheard the man behind the counter telling one other first-timer to this restaurant that the sandwiches here would be the best they had ever eaten.


I ordered the Salad Trio... There was a Chicken and Pasta Salad, a Broccoli and Bacon and a Tomato/Cucumber Vinaigrette. (All gluten-free,) The three salads we served with a bread.  I selected a gluten free roll.   I didn't ask them about cross contamination because I am not gluten intolerant.  I just wanted to  check out what eating gluten-free might be like. So if that is you, you will have to ask your own questions of the management if that is of interest to you.

Lunch was great!  The gluten free roll, for one who does not HAVE TO eat gluten-free and had never eaten a gluten free roll before, was actually good.  I mean, it would take some getting used to if I was to actually be excited about it.  It was a good substitute, but certainly not the same as a more usual wheat product.  My salads, all three of them, were tasty!  My favorite was the broccoli one.  Yum!'

I wonder what location White Box Pies will be at when they move.  I may have to go back and try a sandwich, or maybe take home one of them-thar pies.

Something Else Deli

Ever think about eating something else??  We did!  In case you did not know, Something Else is a sandwich shop and coffee shop on the corner of Second Ave and Sherman.  It is actually housed in two buildings.  On second  is the uniquely styled  coffee shop part... with  a drive through window, serving Panache coffee...



....and on the Sherman side of the corner, is the "deli" style restaurant.

I made the mistake of referring to this place as Someplace Else instead of Something Else.  Someplace Else, which used to be on Sprague is closed.  This is a different eatery... and it is Something Else!

I think I have passed by it at least three hundred times in my life and now I can say I have finally stopped by.  I am glad I did.  I liked the home-like friendly neighbor atmosphere of the place, and the "homemade" food.

One cool thing that I have discovered about this place is that if you'd like to, you can place your sandwich order online and then pick it up!

We ordered our blended coffee from the coffee shop and sat in the Deli side to order and eat some lunch. Our coffee was delivered to our table for us when it was ready.

 We were interested in the special advertised outside, but there was a lot of selection inside.

 We tried the Beef and Barley Soup and the Spicy Chili and we each had a half of the Triple Treat Sandwhich, along with some delicious carrot cake.

What is a triple treat?  It's ham, cheese and pineapple with lettuce and mayo.  Personally, I never thought of putting pineapple on my sandwich, even a ham sandwich but as advertised, it was a treat!

Classic Cafe' (Deer Park, WA)

Just north of Spokane is a little town called Deer Park, and on a recent rainy day, I got to drive there with some friends.  The drive was so pretty.  Our destination was to be a little cafe/coffee shop that we had just heard about, called the Classic.  It is located at 502 S. Main Street.

The place was packed, but not at first.  Apparently, a lot of folks thought it was a nice spot to visit on a rainy day.  They have both indoor and outdoor seating and a drive-thru window.

 At the Classic Cafe, they serve breakfast, ice cream, sandwiches of all kinds, soup and coffee/espresso type of things.  In addition, there are lots of flavors for shakes and Italian sodas too.

Wraps are served with chips and a pickle, though I read in the menu that you can substitute a small salad for the chips if you'd like.  This wrap was delicious.

We also had coffee, (no photo) and we sampled some treats which we shared.

See the t-shirts on the wall?  Apparently, they make a humongous breakfast platter that they challenge individuals to "master," and whereupon mastering you are entitled to flaunt the feat with a T-shirt.  Our lovely waitress informed us that she had tried it once, and only once.... because it was really really big, but she did it!
